Conservation and Ideology

Nicholas Ruiz III, Green candidate for Congress in FL-24, on red snapper bans, Florida ocean
drilling and ideology

(Press Release) - February 28, 2010 - Nicholas Ruiz III, Green Party
candidate for Congress in Florida District 24 today discussed the recent
conservation efforts by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council
(SAFMC) resulting in the 180 day closure of red snapper fishing, and
ongoing shallow-water grouper closure. Ruiz said:

“The evidence speaks for itself. The red snapper and shallow-water
grouper populations are dwindling, with more and more biological survey
samples revealing an increasingly younger, and smaller, population of fish.
Estimates place the red snapper population at 3% of what it was just 60
years ago. In other words, staggeringly, 97% of the red snapper population
has vanished. Anecdotal accounts of large fish being landed are
misleading. At recent harvest rates, the fish populations are in danger of
being depleted even further, possibly irreversibly. They need time to
reproduce and recover. SAFMC is correct in its decision and should be
supported. We all want to protect red snapper and shallow-water grouper
for future benefit of our livelihood and recreation.”

Regarding the recent introduction of the Republican-authored bill, H.R.
4634, intended to quash such fishery closures, Ruiz said: “The ideology of
such a bill is short-sighted and should be dismissed. If we allow over-
fishing now, there will not be fish later.”

According to Ruiz, the same short-sightedness applies to the recent
political positioning in America, by certain factions of politicians, regarding
near shore drilling for oil in Florida. Ruiz, a long-time surfer and fisherman,
is against such drilling and indicated: “The focus needs to shift from old
fossil energy to new renewable energy. There are other ways to fuel our
needs for electricity – wind energy, solar energy – it’s the 21st century, let’s
move forward, no?”

It’s simply disingenuous to claim that ideology and politics are unrelated,
says Ruiz. “The fact is, your ideology, that is, your ‘ideas’ – and everyone
has ideas – drive what you do in the world. If you are for the reckless
pillaging of natural resources, well, that’s an ideology, wouldn’t you say? It’s
not right. We have to consider the well-being of so much more than short
term narrow interests, if the world is to be a prosperous place for us all.”
